WHOOP and OpenAI Launch New Generative AI Coaching Platform – WHOOP Coach

Today, WHOOP announced via a series of tweets and a press release that they have partnered with OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, to launch a new generative AI coaching program – WHOOP Coach.

Will Ahmed, Founder & CEO of WHOOP, says, “With the launch of WHOOP Coach, we’re now offering on-demand, personalized health and fitness coaching. This is the first of its kind and it will transform our members’ relationship with their data.”

Whoop Coach was designed using proprietary WHOOP algorithms and a custom-built machine-learning model to identify patterns in personalized WHOOP data. The idea behind WHOOP Coach is to give customers real-time guidance to any questions they have regarding their performance.

What can WHOOP Coach Do?

“I started Whoop over ten years ago with the goal of creating a 24/7 coach. This new feature helps realize this vision and like all features will continue to improve”, says WHOOP CEO.

With access to your goals, biometric data, and the latest performance science, WHOOP Coach provides personalized guidance to help you achieve your fitness objectives. WHOOP Coach uses your recovery, strain, sleep, health, and stress data to identify patterns and connections to formulate valuable insights.

Custom training plans: Based on the latest performance science, WHOOP Coach creates a training plan tailored to your goals.

Insights into how you are feeling: By analyzing thousands of data points, WHOOP Coach can identify any abnormalities and provide helpful feedback.

Performance Information: Get answers to any fitness-related questions in seconds.

Comparing your stats: See how your fitness data compares to other people your age.

Membership Support: Enjoy 24/7 account assistance with your WHOOP Coach membership.

When will WHOOP Coach be available?

WHOOP makes features available on a rolling basis, it’s expected that WHOOP Coach will be available “soon” to members worldwide. No specific date has been announced, but recent tweets suggest it should be available within the next few days.

How is Whoop Coach Different than ChatGPT?

As the feature is not yet fully rolled out, it’s unclear how it compares to other LLMs. According to WHOOP’s X page, WHOOP Coach is similar to ChatGPT in that it’s a Large Language Model. However, it differs in how it was trained and used.

WHOOP Coach specializes in interpreting the biometric data captured by WHOOP. It is intended to provide personalized responses based on that data. Although most questions asked of WHOOP Coach in the official release video were basic, non-personalized questions, it’s expected that the tool will provide more personalized feedback as it becomes more familiar with your data.

Can You Opt Out Of WHOOP Coach?

If you’re hesitant about sharing your personalized biometric data with OpenAI, you can opt out of using the WHOOP Coach feature at any time. Additionally, WHOOP Coach can be used as a standalone LLM, and you can ask it questions without incorporating your biometric data.

What Type of Data Can WHOOP Coach Use?

WHOOP can track more than 140 custom behaviors in its journal, ranging from diet to medication. WHOOP Coach is a tool that relies on the data it is fed and becomes more effective as it accesses more data. Although WHOOP Coach can utilize all the data that WHOOP tracks, it’s unclear as to what capacity it can provide valuable meaning to the data.

Is Your Data Safe?

While some may be skeptical, others are eager to try this new feature. Whoop was prepared for the skepticism and answered some questions via X.

Q: “Looks cool Will. Will OpenAI have access to our data?”

A: “Your data is not stored with a 3rd party AI technology provider. When you use WHOOP Coach, your anonymized WHOOP metrics are shared with our third-party Large Language Learning Model (“LLM”) partner only when you open the feature. We have ensured that our LLM partner has a “Zero-Retention/Zero Training Policy” with respect to all WHOOP data, meaning that our LLM partner will not store or retain any of the anonymized WHOOP data, and will not use any of the anonymized WHOOP data for training any algorithms or LLM technology.”

Q: “I was considering a Whoop. But if my data is going anywhere near that company, I think I’ll need to abstain.”

A: “Hey there! WHOOP Coach is totally optional, all members have the ability to opt out of the feature at any time. Additionally, it is possible to use WHOOP Coach without incorporating your biometric data for education and support only if you prefer.”

Conclusion

The partnership between WHOOP and OpenAI appears to be a very logical one. WHOOP has access to a vast amount of data that can be utilized by an AI model. If the model is able to offer meaningful insights, it would be a valuable addition to the WHOOP platform. However, since the feature has not yet been fully released, it remains to be seen if WHOOP Coach can deliver on its promises.
