Apple has revealed to Forbes that heating issues were caused by an iOS 17 bug and certain third-party apps overloading the system. Apple assured users they would release a software update addressing these issues without impacting the device’s performance. Importantly, they emphasized that while the temperature issue was severe, it posed no risk to the device’s hardware.
The brand-new iPhone 15 models became available on September 22nd. This long-awaited release was quickly scrutinized as overheating issues became the topic of conversation.
iPhone 15 Features
Introducing a device with many brand-new features made it difficult for users to pinpoint where the overheating issues originated. All four iPhone 15 models – the standard 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max – made notable changes, including switching from the Lightning connector to USB-C and incorporating the Dynamic Island feature.
In terms of processing power, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are equipped with the older A16 chip, while the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max run on the newer A17 chip. The A17 chip consists of 2 high-performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, totaling an impressive 6 cores. Apple claims that the Neural Engine, responsible for AI-related tasks, now operates at double the speed of its predecessor.
The GPU has also seen improvements, featuring 6 cores and delivering speeds that are 20% faster than previous iterations. A noteworthy addition to the GPU is its support for ray tracing, marking a significant advancement in mobile chip technology.
The Pro models take it a step further, introducing a titanium casing that replaces the older models’ stainless steel. This change is intended to address overheating concerns by enhancing heat dispersion.
When setting up a new phone, it goes through additional background processes to get familiarized with the user and re-download personal data. As a result, it’s not uncommon for new phones to generate a bit more heat during this initial period. Yet, it’s concerning that the iPhone 15 models have faced potentially unsafe heat levels amid the demands of a new release and the introduction of new features.
Internet detectives were on the case, attempting to pinpoint the root cause of this issue. Various theories emerged from their efforts:
- Titanium Casing: Some suspected that the heat might be trapped by the Titanium casing used in the Pro models.
- A17 Chip: Others pointed to the new A17 chip as a potential source of the problem.
- Additional Hardware for Gamers: There was speculation that Apple outfitted the Pro and Pro Max models with too much extra hardware to cater to gamers.
- USB-C Chargers and Adapters: Was it the transition to USB-C chargers and the potential use of overpowering adapters causing temperature spikes?
Apple Addresses the Issue
Initially, Apple remained silent on the issue for the first couple of days. They eventually revealed the reasons behind the overheating problem. Speaking with David Phelan of Forbes, Apple provided the following statement:
“We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update. Another issue involves some recent updates to third-party apps that are causing them to overload the system. We’re working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out.”
Apple has confirmed to Forbes that they will release an update to IOS 17 to resolve the bug responsible for significant temperature spikes. They have clarified that this update will not impact the device’s performance and will solely address the temperature issue.
Apple also mentioned that specific apps like Instagram and Uber are known to strain the CPU considerably and lead to temperature spikes. They will address these issues by working with developers to create more efficient apps.
Apple confirmed that although the temperature issue was severe, there is no risk to the device itself. iPhones have built-in protections to prevent overheating from affecting the hardware. While the update has yet to be rolled out, it seems that Apple has put out the fire.
